2017 Tournament
The 34th year of the Annual Bean Camping Tournament was held on October 20th - 21st. The tournament was once again moved to a new location in the town of Fayetteville, Tx.
There were 17 competitors on the board vying for the 2017 championship. With no fodder in attendance, the returning contenders were James E. Bean - Jeff Bean II - John T. Bean Sr. - Michael S. Muhs - Daniel P. Bean - John T. Bean Jr. - James T. Bean - Shane C. Bean - Jim Bean - Richie Wells - Chance McShan - Paul Smith - Grant Jones - Rafael Rojas - Andy Huber - Jordan Brown and Drew Lamont.
After John T. Bean Jr. dominated the field to win his 1st tournament in 2016, the questions were plenty headed into 2017. Could we see yet another new champion? Could the old timers return to prominence?
It didn't take long for the story-line to be written as one competitor was the clear dominant force for the duration of the 2017 tourney. The tournament began with croquet and washers being played concurrently on Friday the 20th and as those events came to close a familiar name claimed the 1st place spot. It was that of 2-time champion Danny Bean. Washer concluded the first day of competition and the night was punctuated with Danny winning 1st in all three of Friday events.
As dawn broke on Saturday the 21st, Danny had a commanding lead with James Bean in the 2nd place spot. The day began with HORSE and Bocce Ball. With a first round loss to Chance in Bocce, there was potentially a window of opportunity for James to make up some ground. As the morning faded into the afternoon James & Danny met in the loser's bracket of Bocce with the winner guaranteeing themselves 3rd in the event and for Danny (who had guaranteed 3rd in HORSE) a win meant securing the tourney. To little surprise, the trend of Tournament continued with a victory from Danny to claim the title in the 34th year of the storied competition.
Coach Vince Lombardi once said "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." And in 2017, the only thing Danny Bean did was win.
All victories carry significance, this win for Danny marks his 2nd in three years and his 3rd overall. Additionally, it is among the more dominance performances in history as he was not eliminated from a single event.
