2018 Tournament
The 35th year of competition is officially in the history books as the 2018 Annual Bean Camping Tournament was held over the weekend of October 25th - 28th. The tournament was held in a new location off the beautiful shores of Lake Limestone in the town of Jewett, Tx at the Lake Limestone Camp and Marina.
13 competitors from across the state were in attendance for 2018 including:
Former Champions: James Bean, Jeff Bean, John T. Bean Sr., Danny Bean, Michael Muhs & John T. Bean Jr.
Former Competitors: Tyler Bean, Drew Lamont, Jim Bean, Jordan Brown, Paul Smith & Andy Huber
And a new competitor "fodder" Matt Lamont also made his maiden voyage to the Tourney.
The first event was Bocce Ball which seemed to favor the younger players in the field as the fodder Matt Lamont took 3rd in the event, his older brother Drew Lamont took 2nd and the defending champion Danny Bean took 1st overall.
The second event to conclude as darkness fell was putt-putt. The field of possible champs already begin to narrow as Drew Lamont placed 3rd and 10x champ James Bean took 2nd. Widening his lead a bit, Danny Bean took his second event of the day by managing to "double-dip" James to claim the event.
The third event of Washers came to a close in the early hours of Saturday morning. Danny could only manage 4th place in washers after suffering losses to James and Andy. Andy took 3rd in the event while Drew (after being double dipped by James) managed 2nd place. James won Washers putting him in better position for Saturday's games.
At the half-way mark of the 2018 games the leaderboard was as follows:
- Danny | 6 points
- Drew | 7 points
- James | 10.5 points
- Matt | 18.5 points
- J.T. | 20 points
Headed into Saturday the name of the game for Danny, Drew and James was to avoid any blow-ups in the remaining events of Darts, Croquet and Bags. Unfortunately for Drew and James, the chess-game of Croquet proved to be their waterloo. Drew lost 2-games straight adding a "13" to his score while James uncharacteristically took a "10.5". While these losses didn't end the Tourney immediately, it put Danny squarely in charge of his own destiny. Before long, without losing a game on Saturday, Danny secured 3rd or better in Bags as well as 6th or better in Darts & Croquet thus mathematically eliminating the other 12 challengers.
And so, to the surprise of few Danny Bean claimed the 2018 Championship and his 4th career title. With this win, Danny become the 3rd player in campout history to win more than 3 times and the 3rd player in history to win back-to-back titles.
